Rodney Brown, founder of New Life Global Development Corp., is on a mission to address homelessness in Los Angeles, the second-largest city for homeless individuals. Having experienced homelessness himself despite working in housing development, Brown is launching a “100-Church Initiative” to repurpose underused spaces in churches for temporary housing. He believes that involving churches is crucial to solving the homeless crisis, emphasizing the need for immediate solutions that bypass lengthy construction timelines. Despite financial challenges and thinning congregations limiting resources, Brown is working with South Los Angeles churches to implement the initiative, which includes collaborations with nonprofits for supportive services.
Brown’s vision involves transforming church fellowship halls into living spaces, equipped with bunk beds and support services from local nonprofits. The initiative aims to provide an affordable and quickly deployable shelter solution. However, financing remains a significant hurdle, as some churches struggle with limited resources.
Nevertheless, a few churches in South Los Angeles are considering the program, recognizing the potential of using underused church properties to address homelessness. Brown remains steadfast in his commitment, viewing this mission as his life’s purpose—to help people, provide housing, and grant access to healthcare, allowing individuals to fulfill their intended purpose in life.
